The installation of the 23rd Suicide Prevention Bench in Aldeburgh, Suffolk was an incredibly moving occasion, one that brought together a community united in their shared purpose of raising awareness around mental health and erasing the stigma attached to it.

This Suicide Prevention Bench was dedicated to the memory of Joshua David Fisk, who tragically took his life in January 2024. The Bench stands as a testament not only to his life but also to the love, strength, and resilience of those who continue to carry his memory forward.

The unveiling was marked by deeply emotional speeches. Joshua’s mother, Lisa, delivered a short yet profoundly moving speech that left a lasting impact on everyone present. In her words, you could feel the  emotion, the grief, and the love that she still holds for her son. Her courage in sharing this moment with the attendees showed just how important these Benches are, not just to help save lives but to help with the healing and remembrance. Lisa’s husband, Jamie, stood by her side, offering quiet support and comfort during a very personal and emotional moment, Lisa’s children James and Scarlet stood close by. Their unity was a powerful display of the strength of family, especially during the most difficult times.

Following Lisa’s heartfelt words, the reverend’s speech provided further reflection and solace. The reverend spoke about the importance of memory, community, and the ongoing need to create safe spaces for individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues. The blessing of the bench was a beautiful moment, a moment of hope and light, as well as a promise that the space would serve as a place of solace for anyone in need.

The final speech of the unveiling was delivered by the Mayor of Aldeburgh, who thanked everyone for attending and for their collective effort in making the installation of this bench possible. The Mayor’s words were full of gratitude and hope, offering encouragement to everyone present to continue working towards breaking the silence surrounding mental health and offering support to those who may need it. The Mayor’s closing remarks were a reminder that, the greatest people find time to help others despite suffering deeply themselves.

A significant part of the success of this event was the tireless efforts of those involved in organizing and fundraising for the bench. A special mention of Sarah Gray, whose dedication and hard work were instrumental in seeing the project through from start to finish. Her efforts along with the staff at Aldeburgh Hospital in raising funds and organizing the installation was crucial to the realization of this tribute to Joshua. The impact of her efforts, as well as the support from the hospital staff, cannot be overstated. It is clear that the bench is more than just a memorial, it is a symbol of a community coming together to honour Josh, provide support and raise awareness.

Together they achieved this tribute to Josh

Together we are all making a difference, we are saving lives but the journey has only just begun. We must keep driving forwards, no one should ever feel the need to take their own life and no family should ever have to go through the total devastation it causes.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and talk:

Courage is also needed to sit down and listen:

Love to you all, be kind.
